About mass and weight
Kitchen scales, shipping labels and gym plates all report “weight,” but the units behind them differ. Convert milligrams, grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds and metric tons.
In short
To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply by 2.20462. One ounce equals about 28.3495 grams; one metric ton equals 1,000 kilograms.
Mass vs weight
Mass is how much matter you have; weight is the gravitational force on that mass. Shop scales and bathroom scales display values treated as mass for everyday conversion. For recipes and parcels, kg↔lb and g↔oz factors are enough unless you need certified metrology.
Cooking & baking
European recipes weigh flour and sugar in grams; many US recipes still use cups or ounces. 250 g of flour is about 8.8 oz. Prefer weighing in grams when a baker’s formula matters—volume cups vary with how you scoop.
Shipping & postage
Carriers price by kilogram or pound depending on the country. A 2 lb package is about 0.91 kg. Check whether the label shows lb/oz or kg so customs declarations and postage calculators match.
Fitness & body weight
Gym equipment and progress photos often mix kg and lb. 70 kg ≈ 154 lb; 135 lb ≈ 61 kg. Pick one unit for your log and convert plate ratings only when the machine is labeled the other way.
Lab & pharmacy amounts
Milligrams appear on supplements and lab samples; kilograms on bulk chemicals. 500 mg = 0.5 g. Double-check the prefix before dosing or diluting—orders of magnitude errors usually start with the wrong unit, not the wrong math.
