About area units
Area measures surface—floors, lots and fields. Convert square meters, square kilometers, square feet, square miles, hectares and acres.
In short
One square meter is about 10.764 square feet. One hectare equals 10,000 m²; one acre is about 4,047 m² (0.405 hectares).
Homes & floor plans
Apartments outside the US are listed in m²; US listings use square feet. 100 m² ≈ 1,076 sq ft. When comparing international rentals, convert every listing to one unit before ranking price per area.
Land & agriculture
Farms in metric countries talk in hectares (1 ha = 10,000 m²). US farmland uses acres (1 acre ≈ 4,047 m² ≈ 0.405 ha). Yield-per-acre and yield-per-hectare numbers are not interchangeable without conversion.
Real estate abroad
A “plot” size on a foreign brochure may be m², hectares or local traditional units already converted poorly. Prefer the legal deed unit, convert once, and keep that figure for taxes and surveys.
Cities & geography
City areas and parks appear in km² or square miles. 1 km² = 100 hectares ≈ 0.386 sq mi. Encyclopedias sometimes mix both—normalize before comparing which metro is “larger.”
Paint, flooring & materials
Coverage rates on paint and flooring packs may say m² per liter or sq ft per gallon. Convert the room area into the unit on the can so you do not under-buy a finish.
